Dominican Republic Trip – August 2025
It was a steamy drive into the hills North of Hato Mayor del Rey following a passing rain shower. The roads were wet, but tidy. The sleepy town seemed deserted but the vibrant landscape seemed welcoming. Our bus came to a stop at the home of Vacilia, a long time client of Esperanza.
Vacilia welcomed our group onto her veranda as she shared her story of using her natural curiosity to build a successful business. What began with a loan of 1000 pesos in 2010 has built a thriving consignment resale store for mostly online shoppers.
Using creative marketing skills, Vacilia anticipates what her customers want and need. She shared that she has just filled an order for back to school supplies knowing that it’s time for parents to prepare. This is just one of many ways the training she has received is paying off.
This creative single mother of two grown children dreams of opening an internet café. She noticed that this is an opportunity for her community and longs to gain the capital to open this unique resource for her neighbors. Both of her children are pursuing professional careers and with her continued support will also realize their own dreams.
When Vacilia was asked why she chose to enter into business with Esperanza rather than other bank lenders, she shared, “They treated me better.” She went on to explain that her loan officer is truly relational and not merely transactional. For her, this has made all the difference.
