Nothing to Fear | Edgar's Story
Edgar Dela Cruz spent years living on the streets of Manila without work, shelter, or stability.
"When we were on the streets, life was really hard. If we had nothing to eat, I ended up stealing."
At times, he and others were even arrested despite doing nothing wrong. Through it all, Edgar held on to faith.
"We had nothing to hold on to except the Word of God. We believed our lives would get better and we had nothing to fear."
A New Beginning
Two pastors introduced Edgar to the Center for Community Transformation (CCT), HOPE's partner in the Philippines. Through CCT, Edgar found both work and community. He first helped construct buildings across the country, then discovered a passion for cooking and received training to grow his skills — later working in the same centers he helped build.
"CCT gave me many opportunities and provided us with a better way of living."
Through a CCT savings group, Edgar gained financial training and access to a loan. He opened a small sari-sari store to support his wife, son, and mother — and now hopes to open a restaurant.
Giving Back
Edgar continues to serve others. He helped two relatives complete their education and lends money to neighbors with no interest when they are in need.
"That is what's important. Even if you have a little, share your blessings."
Today, Edgar's faith remains at the center of everything.
"My only dream is that we never forget the Lord. For whatever our needs may be, He supports us in everything, and nothing is impossible with Him."
